Burning Feet: Treatment and Causes: In addition to a burning sensation in the soles of the feet, other symptoms that may indicate foot numbness include: Redness Swelling Excessive sweating Dull, heavy pain A feeling of increased body temperature Any of these symptoms may be a sign of a more serious illness. Therefore, you should immediately see a primary care physician, a foot specialist, or a neurologist. Causes and reasons for burning feet: One of the most common causes of burning soles and burning pain in the body is injury to or impaired function of the nervous system. These injuries may occur in the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, or in the peripheral nerves that extend throughout the body. There are various types of neurological and spinal complications that can cause symptoms of burning feet. Some of these include: Radiculopathy, or compression of a nerve in the spinal region, which is considered a natural consequence of aging. However, it causes a burning sensation only in some cases, not in all instances. Cervical spondylosis is also a complication of aging, caused by wear and overuse of the bones and vertebrae of the neck, and results in pain in the neck area. A herniated disc occurs when an intervertebral disc slips out of its normal position. A lumbar disc herniation is one of the causes of burning feet. Mononeuropathy, which is any injury to a single nerve or a group of nerves. This condition causes pain in a part of the body. Examples include carpal tunnel syndrome, which causes pain in the wrist; injury to the ulnar nerve, which causes pain in the arm; and sciatica, which affects the nerves in the legs and lower limbs. Whiplash is an injury that causes pain in the soft tissues of the neck. This injury results from a sudden, whip-like movement of the neck, such as that which occurs in traffic accidents. Treatment for burning sensations: Measures you can take at home to relieve pain include: Wearing suitable shoes or slippers Wearing cotton socks to reduce foot sweating Using special insoles for shoes or other orthotic devices Washing the feet with cold water (not ice water) Using cooling creams and ointments. Increasing daily food intake, especially foods rich in B vitamins Resting the feet as much as possible Elevating the feet while resting Reducing the use of drugs and alcohol Treatment methods that your physician may use, depending on the type of underlying cause, include: Prescribing medication (antifungal, analgesic, neurological, and antidiabetic medications) Prescribing ointments and creams Prescribing special shoes or orthotic equipment Surgery to repair damaged nerves or complications affecting the nerves, joints, or muscles.
